Refunds and disputes at a glance

What happens if something goes wrong

A quick summary of the current GRAIL dispute lifecycle. The complete policy below controls.

Covered purchases
Only eligible purchases completed through GRAIL Protected Checkout.
Inspection period
Three days after confirmed delivery for eligible purchases.
How to report
Open a dispute through the applicable GRAIL order or support tools before the inspection period expires.
Seller payout
May remain on hold while delivery, inspection, payout readiness, refund status, or an active dispute is unresolved.
Possible outcomes
Refund, return requirement, denial, seller payout release, cancellation, or another reasonable resolution permitted by policy.
Off-platform transactions
Not covered by GRAIL Buyer Protection or this dispute process.

At GRAIL, we are committed to providing a fair and transparent marketplace for collectors.

While most transactions are completed successfully, disputes may occasionally arise. This Refund & Dispute Policy explains when refunds may be available, how disputes are handled, and the responsibilities of buyers, sellers, and GRAIL throughout the resolution process.

This Policy applies only to eligible purchases completed through the official GRAIL checkout process. Transactions completed outside GRAIL are not covered.

Sections
01

1. Our Goal

Our goal is to resolve disputes fairly, consistently, and efficiently.

When reviewing a dispute, GRAIL considers the available evidence, the responsibilities of both parties, the applicable marketplace policies, and the overall integrity of the marketplace.

Every dispute is reviewed individually.

Submitting a dispute does not guarantee a refund, return, payout release, or any particular outcome.

02

2. Scope of Coverage

This Policy applies only to eligible purchases completed through GRAIL Protected Checkout or another purchase flow expressly supported by GRAIL.

Covered purchase flows may include:

  • Buy Now purchases completed through GRAIL checkout.
  • Accepted offers completed through GRAIL checkout.
  • Auction purchases completed through GRAIL checkout.
  • Other purchase flows expressly supported by GRAIL.

Transactions completed through cash, Venmo, PayPal outside GRAIL, bank transfer outside GRAIL, direct messages, social media, or any other off-platform arrangement are not covered by GRAIL Buyer Protection or this dispute process.

Coverage remains subject to eligibility, timing, evidence, applicable policy requirements, and applicable law.

No statement in this Policy means every on-platform purchase automatically qualifies for every remedy.

03

3. Eligible Disputes

Buyers may submit a dispute if they reasonably believe an eligible purchase has experienced a material issue.

Potentially eligible issues may include:

  • The item was not delivered.
  • The wrong item was received.
  • The item is materially different from the listing description.
  • Significant or material damage was not disclosed in the listing.
  • A material alteration, restoration, repair, or modification was not disclosed.
  • The item is counterfeit, materially inauthentic, or materially misrepresented.
  • The grade, certification, certification number, or card identity is materially incorrect.
  • A lot or bundle is materially incomplete or missing included items.
  • Shipping damage occurred.
  • Fraud or unauthorized activity affected the transaction.
  • Another issue specifically covered under GRAIL’s Buyer Protection Policy.

A dispute must involve a material issue.

Minor differences that do not materially affect the item may not qualify.

Submitting a dispute does not guarantee a refund or a particular outcome.

GRAIL evaluates dispute eligibility and the appropriate outcome separately.

04

4. Issues That Generally Do Not Qualify

Refunds are generally not available for:

  • Buyer’s remorse.
  • Change of mind.
  • Finding a lower price elsewhere.
  • Price changes after purchase.
  • Market value fluctuations.
  • Future collectible-value disagreements.
  • Minor imperfections that were accurately disclosed.
  • Defects clearly visible in listing photographs.
  • Ordinary variations reasonably expected from the disclosed condition.
  • Damage occurring after delivery due to buyer handling.
  • Unauthorized alteration, cleaning, restoration, or removal from a holder by the buyer.
  • Failure to read the listing.
  • Transactions completed outside GRAIL.
  • Carrier delay alone where no loss or other covered issue exists.
  • Failure to collect or receive a package without reasonable justification.
  • A dispute opened after the inspection period without an applicable legal or policy exception.

Each situation is reviewed individually, and exceptional circumstances may be considered where appropriate.

Nothing in this section automatically bars legally protected claims or rights that cannot be waived.

05

5. Three-Day Inspection Period

Eligible purchases include a three-day inspection period.

The inspection period begins when delivery is confirmed through GRAIL’s supported shipping process.

The order experience may show the applicable inspection end date and time.

Buyers should inspect the item promptly and report any material issue before the inspection period expires.

A timely dispute may pause transaction completion and seller payout.

If no qualifying issue is reported before expiration, the transaction may proceed toward completion and payout.

Where the current product supports buyer approval, a buyer may approve inspection before the three-day period expires, which may allow the transaction to proceed toward completion earlier.

Delivery disputes, fraud, unauthorized activity, applicable law, or exceptional circumstances may require separate review.

The inspection period does not eliminate rights that cannot legally be waived.

06

6. Opening a Dispute

If a buyer believes a purchase qualifies for review, the buyer should open the applicable order and use the available GRAIL dispute or support action as soon as reasonably possible.

To help GRAIL investigate efficiently, buyers should:

  • Identify the dispute reason.
  • Describe the issue accurately.
  • Submit supporting photographs or videos when applicable.
  • Provide packaging information when relevant.
  • Provide supporting documentation.
  • Preserve the item and packaging.
  • Respond to follow-up requests.
  • Provide any additional information reasonably requested by GRAIL.

Contacting a seller alone does not necessarily open an official GRAIL dispute.

A dispute is considered opened only when accepted through GRAIL’s supported dispute process.

Support email may remain available for assistance, but buyers should use the in-platform dispute tools whenever possible for order-specific issues.

07

7. Dispute Timing

Buyers should open disputes as soon as reasonably possible and before the inspection period expires for delivery-condition issues.

Current buyer-opened order disputes are supported after delivery while the inspection period remains active.

Some issues, such as suspected unauthorized activity, nondelivery, fraud, or legally protected claims, may require separate timing review based on the facts, available evidence, provider records, and applicable law.

Delays may affect GRAIL’s ability to investigate, verify evidence, preserve shipment records, or recover funds.

Nothing in this Policy promises indefinite dispute eligibility.

08

8. Preserving the Item and Evidence

During a dispute, buyers should not:

  • Alter the item.
  • Remove it from a graded holder.
  • Clean or restore it.
  • Damage it.
  • Dispose of packaging.
  • Resell it.
  • Transfer it to another person.
  • Return it without authorization.
  • Replace it with another item.

Buyers should preserve, where applicable:

  • The item.
  • Slab or holder.
  • Shipping container.
  • Internal packaging.
  • Shipping label.
  • Photographs.
  • Videos.
  • Messages.
  • Documents.
  • Certification information.

Sellers should preserve:

  • Pre-shipment photographs.
  • Listing information.
  • Packaging evidence.
  • Shipment receipts.
  • Ownership or purchase records.
  • Relevant communications.

Failure to preserve evidence may affect GRAIL’s review.

An innocent inability to preserve some evidence, such as discarded packaging, does not automatically determine the outcome, but it may limit the available review record.

09

9. Investigation Process

Every dispute submitted to GRAIL is reviewed individually.

Our review process is intended to gather the relevant facts and reach a fair outcome based on the available evidence.

During an investigation, GRAIL may review:

  • The original listing.
  • Listing revisions.
  • Listing photographs.
  • Listing description.
  • Card details.
  • Grade and certification information.
  • PSA verification data.
  • SportsCardsPro data.
  • Order information.
  • Checkout records.
  • Shipping address information.
  • Shipment tracking.
  • Carrier acceptance.
  • Delivery confirmation.
  • Inspection timing.
  • Marketplace messages.
  • Payment records.
  • Refund records.
  • Seller payout status.
  • Photographs and videos submitted by either party.
  • Packaging evidence.
  • Information provided by shipping carriers.
  • Information provided by third-party service providers.
  • Account and Trust Score history where relevant.
  • Related reports or fraud signals.
  • Any other information reasonably relevant to the dispute.

Third-party data may be incomplete, delayed, corrected, or unavailable.

GRAIL may rely in good faith on information reasonably available at the time of review.

GRAIL is not required to disclose confidential fraud-detection methods, security signals, or internal review thresholds.

Both buyers and sellers are expected to cooperate throughout the investigation.

Failure to provide requested information may affect the outcome of the dispute.

10

10. Seller Response

Sellers may be asked to:

  • Respond to the buyer’s allegations.
  • Provide pre-shipment images.
  • Provide packaging evidence.
  • Provide shipment acceptance records.
  • Explain listing details.
  • Provide proof of ownership.
  • Confirm grade or certification details.
  • Provide other relevant documentation.

Failure to respond may affect Seller Protection or the dispute outcome.

Seller nonresponse does not automatically prove the buyer’s claim, but GRAIL may make a decision based on the information available.

11

11. Seller Payouts During a Dispute

To help protect buyers and sellers, GRAIL may temporarily delay seller payouts while an eligible dispute is under review.

A temporary payout hold does not imply wrongdoing by either party.

Under the current payout resolver, seller payout may remain unreleased when:

  • Delivery is not confirmed.
  • A tracking number is missing where tracking is required by the current order flow.
  • The inspection period has not ended.
  • The buyer has not approved inspection where applicable.
  • A dispute is open or under review.
  • A refund has occurred.
  • Fraud or security review is pending.
  • Stripe connected-account requirements are not satisfied.
  • Another current payout condition remains unresolved.

Printing a label or receiving carrier acceptance alone does not require payout.

Delivery alone may not trigger immediate payout.

Once the dispute has been resolved, GRAIL will process the transaction according to the outcome of the investigation.

GRAIL may release, reduce, reverse, or cancel a transfer only as permitted by the current transaction architecture, applicable policy, and applicable law.

12

12. Return of Items

In certain disputes, GRAIL may require the buyer to return the item before a refund is issued.

Buyers must not return an item unless GRAIL authorizes the return or provides instructions as part of a dispute resolution.

If a return is required, buyers may be required to:

  • Follow the return instructions provided by GRAIL.
  • Use the authorized address.
  • Use a specified tracked method.
  • Ship within the timeframe communicated by GRAIL.
  • Package the item securely.
  • Return all included items.
  • Return certificates, holders, accessories, and packaging where required.
  • Provide tracking.
  • Preserve the item’s condition.

Returning an item without authorization may affect refund eligibility.

A refund may be delayed until the return is delivered and reviewed.

Not every approved dispute requires a return.

GRAIL may determine that return is impractical or unnecessary in limited cases.

No universal return period is created by this Policy; the applicable timeframe will be communicated for the specific dispute when a return is required.

13

13. Condition of Returned Items

The returned item should be in substantially the same condition in which the buyer received it, excluding the issue that caused the dispute.

The following return practices are prohibited:

  • Returning a different card.
  • Returning a different certification number.
  • Removing a card from a slab.
  • Altering or damaging the item.
  • Removing included components.
  • Substituting packaging contents.
  • Returning an incomplete lot.
  • Returning a counterfeit replacement.

GRAIL may inspect return evidence and compare:

  • Certification numbers.
  • Images.
  • Markings.
  • Condition.
  • Quantity.
  • Weight.
  • Tracking.
  • Packaging.
  • Other identifying details.

Fraudulent substitution may result in denial and enforcement.

14

14. Refund Decisions

After reviewing the available evidence, GRAIL may determine that one or more of the following resolutions is appropriate:

  • Approve a full refund.
  • Approve a refund after return.
  • Where operationally supported and appropriate, approve a partial refund.
  • Deny the refund request.
  • Cancel the transaction where appropriate.
  • Release seller payout.
  • Keep payout blocked where appropriate.
  • Take enforcement action against accounts that violate marketplace policies.
  • Implement another reasonable resolution based on the specific facts of the dispute.

Every decision is based on the information reasonably available at the time of review.

Previous dispute outcomes do not guarantee future outcomes.

The current admin dispute workflow supports refunding the original Stripe payment when required payment data exists, resolving a dispute in favor of seller payout release, or keeping payout blocked.

This Policy does not create a self-service partial-refund feature or promise that every refund component is available in every case.

15

15. Refund Components

A refund may include or exclude different transaction components depending on the circumstances, applicable policy, provider handling, and law.

Components may include:

  • Item price.
  • Marketplace fees.
  • Shipping.
  • Taxes.
  • GRAIL Credit.
  • Other charges.

No statement in this Policy means every component is always refunded or never refunded.

When a refund is approved through the current admin dispute workflow and payment data is available, GRAIL may submit the refund through Stripe using the original payment information.

Older or incomplete order records may not support automatic Stripe refund creation through the admin tool.

16

16. Return Shipping

If GRAIL determines that a returned item is necessary to resolve a dispute, we will communicate any applicable return shipping instructions to the buyer.

Responsibility for return shipping costs may depend on the circumstances of the dispute, including:

  • Seller misrepresentation.
  • Wrong item.
  • Shipping damage.
  • Buyer error.
  • Address error.
  • Unauthorized return.
  • GRAIL instructions.
  • Carrier claim.
  • Applicable law.
  • Other circumstances.

Each case is evaluated individually.

GRAIL does not promise free return shipping for every approved dispute and does not automatically charge buyers for every return.

If GRAIL provides a return label, it must be used according to the instructions provided.

17

17. GRAIL Credit During Refunds

GRAIL Credit has no cash value and is not cash, stored money, or a bank account balance.

The current checkout finalization flow records eligible GRAIL Credit redemption as a wallet ledger debit tied to the order.

Treatment of redeemed GRAIL Credit during a refund may depend on:

  • Whether the transaction is fully or partially refunded.
  • Whether the credit was validly redeemed.
  • Fraud or abuse.
  • Current rewards and refund rules.
  • Technical processing status.
  • Applicable law.

Where operationally supported and appropriate, GRAIL may restore eligible redeemed credit, account for it in the dispute resolution, or handle it under the applicable rewards and refund rules.

This Policy does not guarantee cash reimbursement for redeemed GRAIL Credit.

18

18. Partial Refunds

Partial refunds may be appropriate in limited circumstances, such as a case-specific resolution for a material issue where full cancellation is not required.

Where operationally supported and appropriate, GRAIL may approve a partial refund.

Partial refunds are not presented as a routinely available self-service feature.

GRAIL may consider whether the buyer retains the item, the severity of the issue, the original listing, the evidence, the applicable provider constraints, and applicable law.

19

19. Refund Processing Time

Approved refunds are submitted through the applicable payment provider.

The user’s bank, card issuer, or payment provider controls final posting time after the refund is submitted.

Processing times may vary.

GRAIL does not control bank or card-network posting speed.

20

20. Chargebacks and Payment-Provider Disputes

A GRAIL dispute is a marketplace review opened through GRAIL.

A chargeback is a payment dispute initiated through a card issuer, bank, card network, or payment provider.

Buyers should use GRAIL’s dispute process first when reasonably possible for marketplace issues.

Filing a chargeback does not guarantee an outcome.

GRAIL may provide transaction, delivery, communication, and dispute evidence to Stripe or the payment provider.

Duplicate recovery is prohibited.

A user may not keep the item and receive both a GRAIL refund and chargeback recovery for the same loss.

Chargeback abuse may result in restrictions, suspension, Trust Score consequences, or termination under existing rules.

Nothing in this Policy limits lawful rights to dispute unauthorized or legally disputable charges.

21

21. Unauthorized Transactions

Suspected unauthorized account or payment activity should be reported promptly.

GRAIL may:

  • Secure the account.
  • Review login and payment records.
  • Restrict transactions.
  • Request identity verification.
  • Coordinate with Stripe or another provider.
  • Preserve evidence.
  • Take other reasonable security action.

GRAIL does not guarantee reimbursement before investigation.

Nothing in this section prevents users from contacting their financial institution where appropriate.

22

22. Fraudulent Claims

Buyer Protection and the dispute process exist to protect honest marketplace participants.

Submitting knowingly false, misleading, or fraudulent claims is strictly prohibited.

Examples include:

  • Providing altered photographs.
  • Submitting false documentation.
  • Returning a different item than the one received.
  • Empty-box returns.
  • Intentionally damaging an item after delivery and claiming it arrived that way.
  • Claiming nondelivery after receipt.
  • Claiming a wrong item while retaining the correct item.
  • Attempting dual recovery.
  • Coordinating fraudulent activity with another account.
  • Manipulating tracking.
  • Misusing chargebacks.
  • Submitting false counterfeit claims.
  • Abusing refunds or GRAIL Credit.

Fraudulent claims may result in:

  • Denial of the dispute.
  • Loss of Buyer Protection eligibility.
  • Trust Score consequences.
  • Reward reversal.
  • GRAIL Credit reversal.
  • Buying or selling restrictions.
  • Account suspension or termination.
  • Referral to payment processors, service providers, or authorities where appropriate.
23

23. Seller Misconduct

Seller-side abuse may include:

  • Shipping a different item.
  • Sending an empty package.
  • Concealing material damage.
  • Shipping counterfeit items.
  • Making false certification claims.
  • Manipulating tracking.
  • Refusing reasonable cooperation.
  • Retaliating against a buyer.
  • Applying off-platform pressure.
  • Asking the buyer to close a dispute in exchange for action.
  • Repeated material misrepresentation.

Possible consequences may include:

  • Refund decision against the seller.
  • Payout cancellation or delay.
  • Trust Score consequences.
  • Reward reversal.
  • Listing restrictions.
  • Suspension.
  • Termination.
  • Other action under the Terms of Service.

Not every seller-losing dispute proves intentional misconduct.

GRAIL may distinguish good-faith mistakes from fraud or repeated policy violations.

24

24. Communications During Disputes

Buyers and sellers should communicate through GRAIL where possible.

Communications must remain truthful and respectful.

Threats, harassment, coercion, retaliation, and attempts to manipulate evidence are prohibited.

Users should not negotiate off-platform payments to resolve an official dispute without GRAIL authorization.

Marketplace messages may be reviewed as evidence.

25

25. Cooperation During Investigations

Buyers and sellers agree to cooperate with reasonable requests made by GRAIL during a dispute investigation.

This may include providing:

  • Photographs.
  • Videos.
  • Tracking information.
  • Packaging information.
  • Communication records.
  • Proof of shipment.
  • Proof of delivery.
  • Proof of ownership.
  • Other documentation reasonably necessary to evaluate the dispute.

Failure to cooperate may affect GRAIL’s ability to resolve the dispute and may influence the final decision.

26

26. Final Decisions and Reconsideration

After reviewing the available information, GRAIL will communicate its decision to the parties involved.

Our decisions are made in good faith based on the evidence reasonably available at the time of review.

Because every dispute is unique, previous decisions do not establish precedent or guarantee the outcome of future disputes.

Where appropriate, GRAIL may reconsider a decision if significant new evidence becomes available within a reasonable period after the original decision.

GRAIL may also reconsider a decision when:

  • A carrier or provider corrects information.
  • Fraud is later identified.
  • A return reveals substitution or material inconsistency.
  • Applicable law requires reconsideration.
  • Another substantial reason supports review.

Reconsideration is discretionary unless required by law.

This Policy does not create an unlimited appeal right or formal multi-stage appeal process.

27

27. Refund and Dispute Processing Errors

GRAIL may correct refund and dispute processing errors when reasonably necessary.

Examples include:

  • Duplicate refunds.
  • Incorrect refund amounts.
  • Incorrect credit restoration.
  • Mistaken payout releases.
  • Technical status errors.
  • Duplicate dispute records.
  • Other obvious processing mistakes.

Corrections should be handled reasonably, in good faith, and consistently with applicable law and marketplace policies.

This section does not weaken Buyer Protection or authorize unlawful recovery of funds.

30

30. Changes to This Policy

GRAIL may update this Refund & Dispute Policy from time to time to reflect changes in:

  • Marketplace features.
  • Buyer Protection procedures.
  • Shipping processes.
  • Fraud prevention practices.
  • Payment systems.
  • Applicable laws.
  • Business operations.

When material changes are made, we may notify users through the Platform, email, or another reasonable method.

The “Last Updated” date at the top of this Policy indicates when the current version became effective.

Your continued use of GRAIL after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy, to the extent permitted by applicable law.
